Camille

We pulled up into the gas station/bus stop in Victoria. It was just after one in the morning. Jasmine and Alexis must have been too wired to go back to sleep because they both sat straight as a board in their seats.

Alexis yawned and stretched. “This has been a crazy night. And boy am I tired.”

“Think of how I feel. Until we got lost, you and Jasmine had been asleep the whole way,” I joked, trying to lighten the mood.

“Unh-unh. I drove, too,” Alexis protested.

“Yeah, to the other side of Houston. Then you started hollerin’ about you were too sleepy to drive. I’ll be right back.” I shook my head as I got out of the car and walked inside the store. “Hello,” I said to the clerk. “Has the bus from Houston gotten here yet?”

“Nope, it’s due in about thirty minutes,” the clerk replied.

“Okay, thanks.” I made my way back out to the car. “Good, we didn’t miss the bus. It hasn’t made it here yet,” I said as I climbed back in. “It’s due in about thirty minutes.”

“I hope she’s on it. We get her and get our tails back to Houston,” Jasmine said.

“Guys, I’m sorry.” I never imagined we would’ve had such a difficult time catching up with Angel.

“Don’t worry about it,” Alexis said. “At least you got us out safely.”

“Yeah, because if that man had killed me, I would’ve had to come back from the dead to kill you.” Jasmine finally smiled as she leaned her head back against the seat.

I giggled and leaned back, too. We sat taking in the quiet and the next thing I knew, all three of us had dozed off. Instinct made me pop up about forty-five minutes later. I glanced over to see the big gray bus parked in front of the gas station. I shook Jasmine and Alexis. “Wake up. The bus is here. Let’s go.”

It took a minute for everything to register, but when it did, Alexis and Jasmine jumped out of the car and followed me inside.

“Do you see her?” Alexis asked as she caught up with me.

We looked around the small station. Angel was nowhere in sight.

“Where could she be? I hope that lady knew what she was talking about.” I prayed that we hadn’t gone on a wild-goose chase. I turned to look around the station one more time. I was just about to walk away when I spotted Angel wobbling out of the ladies’ room. “Angel!”

Angel looked up and frowned when she spotted us. “Camille! What are you doing here? What are you all doing here?”

Alexis ran over and hugged Angel. “We were so worried about you.”

Angel still had a confused look on her face. “Are you guys alone?” she asked as she glanced around the station.

“Yes, we drove down here trying to find you,” Alexis said.

“By yourselves?” Angel was obviously astonished.

“Yes, we were worried about you being out here by yourself,” I said.

“Wow. I can’t believe you went through all of that for me.
